Dragon’s Loyalty Award

dragons loyaltyToday I have been given an award tag by a fellow blogger I have enjoyed following.  She is a teenage blogger named Natalie who blogs about Disney and makeup on her blog Disney Freak with a Bit of Mascara and does a great job with it. You would never know that she is so young by her writing.

She even delights in pointing out the flaws in my favorite Disney movies like Little Mermaid and Frozen. LOL. It’s all in good fun and she does a good job stating her opinion in a thoughtful and coherent way. And she’s always respectful of people who think differently which is a great attribute in a young person (I sound like I’m 150!).

Everyone check out her blog and give her some more followers.

Anyway, she has tagged me and it is a pretty simple one.  Here’s the steps.

1.Thank the person who nominated you for this award.

2.Include the award logo.

3.State seven facts about yourself.

4.Nominate a few other bloggers.

As far as facts about myself you guys know everything there is to know about me.  So most of this is a review to my regular readers but I hope you enjoy it.

7 Facts About Me

  1. I have a lazy eye and have had surgery twice to help correct it.  Read here Strabismus
  2. I served my LDS Mission in Indianapolis, Indiana and it was a grueling but incredibly valuable experience.   They are getting a temple this month!!  So excited.

  5. 3 of my cousins closest to me in age have passed away. (That’s a sad fact but true).
  6. I graduated with my MBA in 2008 from University of Phoenix and it was a very proud moment for me.
  7. I’ve never been kissed and I’m 34.  Not ashamed just the way life has worked out. I’m happy with who I am.
  8. Lastly I currently have 2 blogs, a youtube channel, pinterest, periscope, snapchat, twitter, facebook, and more.  It’s madness but I love it!!! :

I always struggle with these kind of tags or nominations because I don’t want people to feel like they have to do it.  They seem kind of like a chain letter but I have fun doing it so hopefully others do as well.

I nominate

Just an Update

Sporting my ninja turtle look. Hi from Recoveryville! Turtle power!

Hey guys!  I’ve been having so much fun with my Disney reviews I don’t want you to think I am ignoring this blog.  While still in recovery honestly not a lot has been happening in my life.

As far as my recovery I have made huge strides with my knee.  I don’t need my cane anymore which is great and I can get down and up the stairs with relative ease.  I went to a movie yesterday and that was a lot of pressure on the knee, so maybe a bit early on that but I made it through.

I also went to the grocery store for the first time last week which was very exciting!  You sure appreciate the small things when you are injured.

But thankfully I feel confident I will be close to fully recovered in the next 2 weeks.  Hurray!

I just finished review #20 on my Disney blog and it has been so much fun.  If you haven’t take a look check it out http://54disneyreviews.wordpress.com/

Today’s review is The Aristocats which was not my favorite because I felt it borrowed too much from Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmations.  I don’t care for Disney when I feel it is being lazy.

I also did a post on my youtube channel about romantic comedies that turned out pretty well.

I have book club coming up this Saturday and I am very excited about that.  We are reading To Kill a Mockingbird and am about half way done on this reading.  One thing that strikes me on this read-through is how little time is actually spent in the courtroom.  It’s all about the relationship building done in subtle interactions of the family.

A friend of mine told me she had never reread a book before and that still amazes me.  A book like To Kill a Mockingbird changes with each reading, so you really miss out on reading it once.   I hope someone comes to book club because I’m looking forward to discussing it.

Other news…I saw Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday and I liked it.  Comic book movies will never be my favorite but this was a lot of fun.  I thought the characters were the best part.  The story was more standard and predictable.  The villain was ok. But the characters were charming and Chris Pratt as Starlord reminded me of a young Harrison Ford.

Have any of you seen it?  What did you think?  Definitely one of the best comic book movies I’ve seen in a long time.  It didn’t take itself too seriously which is what I like about the Marvel films.  DC films like Man of Steel are so morose and brooding.

Anyway, I liked it.

But that’s about it.  I’ve been watching Big Brother and it was fun while Zach was there but have kind of lost interest.  Any of you watching that show?  Looks like Derrick is going to win and he’s played a good, if rather tedious game

Life is pretty boring at the moment but I’m happy with that.  Just want to be 100% and be able to cook a meal again.  Going to be a great day when it happens.  Thank you so much for all the support and prayers.  I have felt them everyday.  Love you all!

Things You Probably Like That I Don’t Like

In general I don’t think of myself as a picky person.  I try to be open minded but just like anyone else I have honed in on my likes and dislikes over the years.  I’m not a very counter-culture person but there are a few things that nearly everyone likes that I don’t like.

Here you go:

Fake Cheese- I hate that goopy yellow stuff they put on nachos, velveta, the american cheese wrapped in plastic slices, cheese wiz, cheese from a can. You get the idea.

Catch 22 and Catcher in the Rye- I hated both of these books and would not read them again unless a gun was at my head

Anti-hero Shows- I’ve genuinely tried to get into Sopranos, Nurse Jackie, Breaking Bad, Dexter and other shows with these ne’er-do-wells and I just can’t get into them.  Too violent for my tastes and I found them to be boring.  I hated the Big C.  All of the characters are scum.  I didn’t like a single one.  I liked Mad Men for a while but even that became too sadistic and immoral for my stomach to handle.

(I thought of this post because everyone is talking about Breaking Bad and I just couldn’t get into it)

The Bachelor- I have so many friends who are into this show and report about it on facebook.  In the age of feminism it boggles the mind.  How can they be surprised when these staged relationships don’t work out?  The man has been courting 20 other women while claiming to be in love with you? I have never gotten it.

Sheryl Crow- People love Sheryl Crow. Not me.  I think she is a poser.  When things need to be country, she does country.  When things need to be a little more edgy, she does that and then we are back to Lilith Fair.  Give me a break.

Twilight- I liked the first 2 twilight books actually a lot.  They were fun and romantic.  Then the 3rd book came and I hated it.  I hated that Bella became a damsel in distress.  I hated the love triangle especially after the mutual acknowledgments between Edward and Bella in New Moon.  I hated how nothing surprised me.  I hated the dialogue.  I hated the messages to women.  I like the ideas about abstinence and purity but don’t like how they were couched in such dime novel drivel.

Socks- My roommate is always getting at me about wearing socks.  I hate socks and wear sandles or flats whenever I can.  Don’t know why I just do

Protein anything- I hate protein powders, drinks and bars.  And yes I’ve tried yours and I hated it.  Everyone I have tried has made me want to spit it out.  The texture and taste are like eating tar.

Dark Knight- We’ve already learned that I am one of the few who did not like the Dark Knight.  We should really start a support group for those that don’t like this movie.  Its a lonely world.

Kevin Hart- I have never heard a more annoying man in my life.  Just his voice is like nails on a chalkboard.  I didn’t laugh once at a recent bit I saw in him and in a movie I wanted to punch him each time he was in a scene.  Like Tracey Morgan but worse.

30 Rock- Speaking of Tracey Morgan I do not like 30 Rock.  I have never found it funny and tried lots.  It just doesn’t make me laugh.

Rhubarb and Figs- So far I’ve not had either in a preparation I’ve liked. Open to the possibility of liking them.

Dried Fruit- I want to like dried fruit but I just don’t.  Its ok but I never crave it and I find I buy it hoping I will snack on it and it always seems too sweet for me.  Not a fan.

Running- I hate running.  This is why I swim. I would rather do just about anything than go for a run.

Driving- If I could live without driving I would be a happy girl.  I really dislike it, so anytime people suggest they will drive I’m in!

Camping- Everyone knows this but I know you love it.  I do not.  I do not like the bugs, dirt, wild animals, or sleeping on the ground.  Sorry.

Dancing- Everyone also knows this.  I will go and dance occasionally to meet new people but I really don’t like it.  The horrible music is too loud and I have no natural rhythm. Not a fan.

YA Books- Clearly there are some YA books that I like but I’d say I dislike the genre more than most people I know.  I feel it is getting so reductive.  I’m bored with YA and usually they involve fantasy which I am not a fan of in general.

Black Licorice- It seems you either love it or hate it. I hate it!

So there you go! What do you think of this list!

April Randomness

Here’s one of my random posts!

My new freezer is awesome but I also tried out my foodsaver for the first time this morning.  I got a great deal and am excited to add it to my garage of culinary gizmos.  There’s just something about seeing vacuum packed food that makes you feel like you’re in the future!

My first saved food!

I’m hopeful that the eggs will stay yellow with the air being sucked out.  I’ve had bad luck with freezing eggs.  They get kind of gray and gross.  It makes cooking breakfast in advance hard and I hate cooking breakfast.

The limes and peppers are leftover from my last bountiful basket.  I hope to use them for salsa and hopefully there will be tomatoes in the next basket, which I am getting on Saturday!  My friends Erin and Kate are splitting 2 baskets with me. Oh la la!  It is really exciting to wonder what you are going to get and everything has been so delicious the anticipation is palatable!

(Using the foodsaver and freezer supposedly food can last for 2 years! This should save me a lot of money throwing away uneaten food).

I have mentioned it a few times but in recent years I have become a fan of essential oils, particularly from Doterra because their oils are not merely aromatic.  They help me with my pain, ward off illness and even boost my mood. I used to have a roommate who was super into essential oils and it drove me crazy so I will spare you a spiel.  I just wanted to share a new idea my friend Jill told me about.

With a low thyroid I get dehydrated more quickly so I have to focus on drinking lots of water.  My new trick is to put Doterra lemon/lime oil in my water and it is sooooo good!  Its so much better than a wedge of lemon or lime.  Its sweeter and less bitter than you’d expect.  Its really delicious.

On a related note I have found a rub for muscle relief I love.  Its called Badger Sore Muscle Rub.   It’s one of the only muscle rubs I’ve tried without menthol which provides mostly placebo relief.  Essential oils are great but sometimes too strong for use in public.  Badger rub provides relief but it smells nice and lemony, not overpowering.  The little container goes a long way and at $10 its a great price!

I could easily wear this to work or around town and nobody would notice anything offensive.  Its a wonder product!

The Weirdness of Singing

Today I had master class for my voice lessons.  This is a monthly event where we prepare a solo to preform for our fellow students and teachers.  Singing in front of a crowd has always been difficult for me.   Acting and performing the song is easy its just trusting my voice that’s hard.  One of the many weird things about singing is that you don’t hear your voice accurately.  What I mean by that is when I hear myself sing I am having an entirely different experience then the audience.  Something that sounds  over-the-top to me, even shouting, sounds great to them.  Something that seems big to me, may need more emphasis to them.  Its almost as if you have 2 different voices- one the voice I hear, and one the voice everyone else hears.

In my lessons I often have to trust my teacher that my voice sounds good.  In my ear it sounds screeching or off but in her ear it is great.  Today at master class I sang “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray.  For the first 2 verses I did pretty good (in fact my teacher said it was the best belt sound she’d heard in me).  Unfortunately once the chorus came I hit a high note weird and had a hard time fighting my way out of that bad voice moment. It was especially frustrating because I had done it right in practice just hours before.

By the end of the song I was feeling deflated and discouraged, almost wishing I could walk away for the feedback.  Amazingly enough the good job I had done for the first half of the song got very high praise and the weak 2nd half a few minor critiques.  They even said if I hadn’t made it such a big deal in my facial expression they would not have noticed most of the mistakes. My teachers were especially pleased with my performance and said I told the story well, and some of the best  mix/belt I’ve ever sang- even with the mistakes.

This scenario at master class is exactly why I am still taking voice lessons.  When I sing I want to be perfect.  I want to be a skilled singer more than almost anything else in the world.  It satisfies a longing in my heart placed there when I was just a girl.  Naturally wanting to be perfect I notice each flaw in the performance.  Does the audience notice- no, unless I make them notice by my facial expressions? Even more, my actual voice sounds better to the audience then it does in my ear.  Isn’t that strange?

I wonder how many times I criticize myself for something others find beautiful? I’m not sure I want to know the answer.  I have always been pretty open in complementing myself and have a high self esteem; however, with the singing, my voice actually sounds different to my ear.  In a way I have to throw out my ears and listen with other ears- not an easy task.  Once I am hearing myself through their ears then I will hear the beauty of my voice in a new way.  I’ve gotten better at this over the years but still have a long way to go.

I wonder how many other parts of my life I am hearing the wrong voice? I hear the squeaky nervous girl.  Everyone else hear’s the belty/mix girl with a lot of spunk?  Is there beauty within me that I don’t notice but others would applaud? Hmmmm. Makes you wonder?

This is kind of a rambling post.  Hope it makes sense.

By the way….exciting news!  I bought a piano!  It is a Samick SSP10 Digital Piano. It is very well made, looks gorgeous in my room and is drooling in anticipation for its inaugural jam session.  I love singing with my friends, and I hope the piano will make my apartment even more of a gathering place.   It will certainly help with my voice because I can at least plunk out most songs.  It’s awesome!  You should all come and sing/play with me!

My piano!!! Come jam with me!

I am going to continue working on Good Morning Baltimore and eventually I will post my performance online.  It will be awesome.  Tracy Turnblat never sounded so good!
