Girls Night Slumber Party

girls night 3

I’ve got a challenge for all of you lovely readers.  I defy anyone to produce better friends than I have.   It can’t be done.  They defend me when I am sad, are incredibly loyal and also a lot of fun.   I just love them and after the month I’ve had I wanted to say thanks and relax with my girls.

A few days ago I was talking to a box review friend that unfortunately I can’t remember who it was (if you are out there please remind me).  We were discussing how we had more make up from box reviews than we could deal with.   It really starts to add up quick and not all of it is good for my complexion so it could go unused.

So my friend and I were talking about our excess makeup problems and she told me she was going to have a makeover party with her friends to have fun and use up the makeup.  All of you know I love a party so this sounded like a great idea to me! Plus I felt exhausted by October so why not?

I put out the word of a girls night out to my friends and gave them plenty of warning and reminded them a couple of times.  I also invited a new friend Lindsay who I know from twitter.  I always have an eclectic group at my parties.  This was no exception.  There was Emilee and Rachel who I knew from singles ward and Hawaii 2011, Stefanie my roommate from 2006-2007 and bestie, and Rachel my friend from book club (yes, 3 Rachel’s- party!) .  I like having different people at parties so you have a mixture of conversation and personalities.  It is a risk but usually leads to the best time by all.

The party was easy to plan.  I put together goodie bags using dollar store items (and some see’s candy!).   I figured it was my chance to put together my own beauty bag so it fit well with the theme of the party.

In Rachel's beauty bag we had lip gloss, nail polish, q-tips, glow bracelet, pedicure kit, cherry tea light and 2 see chocolates

The food for the party was easy.  I got a take and bake pizza and some baked chicken strips from a local restaurant. I didn’t have to cook anything which was good because I have been working and starting nanowrimo so no time to cook!

The girls got there at different times and we chatted for the first hour or so.  Then we ate and started our makeovers.  Masks, apple peel (from Juice Beauty, a great birchbox find) and exfoliants were used by various people.  Then we moved on to the eyes, lips and nails.  We looked very pretty by the end of the night!

girls night 2Then we finished up the night watching Joss Whedon’s new Much Ado About Nothing which was really fun.  They shot the film in 12 days with hardly any  budget but that was all for the benefit of the film.  I liked the black and white photography.  You could tell the performers were all friends (I guess Whedon does Shakespeare readings with his friends (great idea for next party!) and he had a break between the Avengers and decided to make a movie in his house.  Love that!

So I think the party was a great success and I look forward to the next one.  What do you gals like to do for girls night out?   I think as a 32 year old singlite I’ve got the girls night out down.  So fun!

Now off to write my next section of nanowrimo!  How are you all doing on your word counts?

UP Housewarming/Birthday Party

So today was the big day!  My ‘Rachel Turns 32 and Gets a House Party’.  My birthday was actually a few weeks ago but I wanted to combine my housewarming and birthday parties into one big bash.  I hired my Dad’s tenant and our friend Dax to come over and assemble furniture, hang artwork and that was such a great move.  It made the house feel really done. Outsourcing is almost always a fabulous idea!

My roommate was a wonderful help with cleaning and organizing for the party and my cousin Danielle came down and got balloons and helped me to clean (she’s the best!).  I was a little worried that the emerging storm might scare people off but luckily there was a steady flow of people from 5 all the way to closing time at 10.

I saw old roommates, ward friends, swim friends, cousins, just good friends.  It made me feel happy that I have such wonderful people in my life.  There were also many who could not come because of illness or other concerns and I could feel their thoughtfulness light up inside of me.  I really do have the best friends ever.

One fun thing is that my curtains got installed today and while I was at Costco getting party trays (yum!) the guy worked on the install so when I came home they were done which was a fun surprise.  They look so good.  I love them!  I just love my house!  It was so fun to share it and maybe show off just a little bit to my friends.  It was a happy moment and I feel full of joy.  I really do love my house!

The party was super fun and I’m so grateful for everyone who came.  The cake turned out amazing!

front of cake- I couldn’t cut into it but we had a sheet cake for guests.  Will cut into Sunday when my family is town.  Too pretty to eat!

Everything else in the party turned out great.  There was a yummy spread with sandwiches, shrimp and super good strawberries all from Costco.  Seriously the strawberries were delectable.

The favors were really cute from etsy store http://www.etsy.com/shop/JegasCreations.

If you’ve seen the movie Up you should recognize this pin. We also had grape soda to drink.

I made this guest book for the party which I think turned out super cute too.

If you've seen the movie Up you should get this adventure book. Isn't it cute?

Here are some photos of some of the friends at the party.  There were of course many people I didn’t get photos of.  Thanks to everyone who came!  It’s always so nice to see that old friends are still good friends and that you don’t have to see someone everyday to still be tight.  I am a very loved person.

It’s going to be a party that will be hard to top and while I am exhausted it is a happy kind of tired.  A feeling loved and a sense of satisfaction tired.  Its a job well done and feeling of accomplishment kind of tired.  It’s the end of a journey and the beginning of an adventure. Most importantly I feel so loved.

500 Days of Summer, 100 Posts

I have exciting news- this is my 100th post!  This means since May of last year I have written a post about every 5 days.  So far there have been 8,700 hits and 233 comments.  I wish there were even more comments, but am thoroughly grateful for the ones I’ve gotten! Thanks everyone.  The blog has turned into one of my favorite hobbies.  I love it!   (by the way, I should have my rightwingchickie guest blog ready tomorrow or Saturday. Just doing some final edits.  I am so excited!).

This week has been a fun week.  It has gone by quickly starting with getting our home, the Sammy, ready for the long term tennants.  This was quite the task with cleaning, gardening, moving furniture and more.  The new tenants came on Tuesday and are thrilled (not that there was any doubt!).  Now I have 2 vacation rentals and 2 long-term rentals.  In addition, today I got a call from a friend of my dad’s wanting me to find tenants for his long-term rental.  The business is growing so fast I can hardly keep up with it, but I am grateful to be busy.  As long as I can continue to work independently and be my own boss then I am happy.  Even with all the stresses and the never-ending work, the idea of going back to a regular job makes me nauseated.  I hope it never happens.

Once Tuesday was over (and the long days getting the house ready) I got to work Wednesday on my events calendar for Grabber warmers.  I have a booth and a warm team van I take to events all around Utah, and I had to get the calendar ready for my supervisor to approve.  It has been next to impossible to get this calendar ready by the end of the August (so I missed it by 3 days, it counts), but somehow I squeezed it in and it is done! Isn’t it the best feeling when a project is finished? Especially one you doubted your ability to complete?  It is the best!

With all this work you might wonder if I had any fun this week.  Fortunately last month I planned a long overdue Mary Kay party with my friend Laura South.  She had been encouraging me to host a party for a year or more and finally I found the time to do it on Wednesday.  After my recent debacles with enrichment parties (see Thoroughly Uncool) I wondered if anyone would come- particularly after several last minute cancellations.  I was seriously worried it would be me, Laura and my friend Suzanna.  To my surprise and delight the turn-out was great.  My friend Rachel H. brought 3 of her friends!  This in a addition to Suzanna, Melany, Anna and Becca.  Including Laura and myself we had 10 people.  My only regret is I was so busy hosting I forgot to take a picture! The food was good, the make up was fun and we all got great prices on good quality make-up.  I will definitely consider throwing another party.  Is it terrible to feel a little popular after such a party?  That is how I felt yesterday.  It was a nice feeling after a summer consumed with work (since Hawaii at least).

Today I took some time off wrote my article for right chicks, attended voice lessons with Anna (so excited!), and then had a lovely dinner with my great friend Angie Powell Barratt.  She recently got married and this was my first time to her house.  It is a charming house built in 1901 they are restoring bit-by-bit (so much cuter than some bland new house).  We talked the night away and it was a lovely evening.  I turned my phone on silent and just enjoyed myself.  Sometimes the best thing is eating a good meal with a lovely friend.

My last comment is on the movie 500 days of summer.  Maybe it is because I feel like there has been 500 days this summer, but I loved it.  There are so few movies which feel  authentically creative- too many are sequels or rip-offs of earlier, better movies.  The plot is about a young couple (Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zoey Deschanel) that have a 500 day relationship.  In a very  creative way the story jumps around from one moment to another showing day 5,  301, 499 and back to 1 etc.  It takes a bunch of creative risks including non-linear storytelling, over-the-top narration, a large musical number, sketch drawing on the whole screen, dual panels with different story-lines, and more.  The acting was good,  writing funny, and the music was cool.  It does have a few objectionable things and probably earns its PG-13, but for adults it is wonderful.

One small thing I appreciated about the movie is its non-cliche ending.  The characters are not in a storybook relationship, but they still learn much from each other.   They are even unlikable  in whole sections of the movie- particularly Deschanel (her character is named Summer, hence 500 days of Summer).  In real life most people have a series of teaching relationships before meeting the right person. This movie shows the process of becoming the right person for someone else through a relationship. It is an unexpected and interesting movie on so many levels- characters, plot, sets, style and more.  It is also the kind of movie that is better in the theaters.  You will appreciate the creative touches more on the big screen.  I hope you all like it.  Let me know what you think!
