My Christmas Tree 2017

Hey guys! I just wanted to share with you a quick photo of my Christmas tree this year! It’s actually slightly different than the ‘memory trees’ I’ve done in the past. For years I put little frames with black and white photos on the tree, which I loved. Unfortunately after 10 years or so of use they were finally starting to fall apart and I just felt like switching things up a little bit. I am also in love with my new tree and I didn’t want it to be overly covered up.

The reason I am in love with it is I decided to purchase a flocked Christmas tree this year. I thought about getting a white tree and really do something different but when I saw this I knew it was perfect for me! I love the look of the snow and the white/green touches with the ornaments. I am excited to have my tree up early so I can enjoy it for over a month! It’s so pretty! 🙂

Have you ever switched up your Christmas tree and done something different? It feels good and less boring old Christmas! I highly recommend it. Let me know what you’ve tried and what you think of my tree. Merry Christmas!

Trees, Turkey, Meals and Lights

Hi guys!  I just wanted to give you a little update on my life.

Well to begin with Christmas has arrived. Got the lights and the tree up!

lightswindowThis year I rented my Christmas tree which is a completely brilliant notion.  Instead of having to store a giant tree all year and lug it out, decorate it by myself, I signed up and for the price of a house cleaning it is set up, stored, decorated and taken down at end of season.

treeAs some of you will remember from years past I have a memory tree with ornaments from travels and all other parts of my life.  I also have little picture frames that have black and white photography of my friends and family, which is especially nice this year as I will not be seeing family and my best friend Emily is away.

I have a few new ornaments to add to the tree.  Some I got in Tampa and these fun Disney ornaments to pay tribute to my Disney project and blog this year.

disney ornamentIn other news Thanksgiving has been a lot of fun.  I went to my aunt and uncle’s for dinner and it was a full house of cousins and relatives.  I was in charge of making the salad and it turned out pretty tasty.

And now a little recipe.

saladArugula Salad with Butternut Squash and Apple Cider Dressing

Arugula

pomegranate pips  (put pomegranate under water and it makes it easy to de-seed)

butternut squash peeled, seeded and diced into 1 inch cubes

parmesean cheese

walnuts

cranberries

apple cider

apple cider vinegar

olive oil

shallots finely diced

digon mustard

maple syrup

Start with butternut squash on baking sheets with olive oil and maple syrup. Put in 375 degree oven for 45-60 minutes until the cubes are tender but crusted on outside.  While cooking mix 2 tbsp vinegar, 3/4 cup cider, 2 tbsp syrup, 2 tbsp shallots in saucepan.

Cook for 8-10 minutes until mixture has thickened.  Then add1/2 cup olive oil, 2 tbsp mustard, 1/4 cup maple syrup.  Put in jar and shake until mustard is emulsified.  I added a little water because my vinegar was strong.  If you like it sweeter add more syrup . If you want more mustard go for it!

I used a cranberry walnut mixture I bought at the store but if you don’t have that then I would roast the walnuts before.

When serving add arugula, butternut squash, walnuts, cranberries, pomegranate pips, parmesean shavings.  Add all ingredients and top with dressing and serve!

Since I wasn’t cooking Thanksgiving dinner I decided to order one from my local market, Harmons, so I could have some leftovers!  It was pretty cool I got everything from a full turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, stuffing, green beans, rolls and 2 pies for $100.  Pretty cool right?

So I portioned it all into meals and have them ready in my chest freezer for many holiday meals to come! Pretty clever right?

So that’s my little holiday update. I hope you are all doing great and having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.  Make sure to check out Scrooge month on my other blog.  I’m having a blast watching and writing about these films of the story I love so much. I just posted yesterday about the Alistair Sims classic and today on the Disney stop motion effort.

Christmas Fun

So I have had a great start of the Christmas season!  It’s only the 7th but I have done so many fun things.  It all started yesterday with the singles 31+ dance at the Utah State capitol building.  I kind of hate dances but the idea of dressing up sounded fun so I went with some friends from my ward and we had a great time.  I asked someone to dance so I did my duty!

After the dance we all went Village Inn and the girls were very bubbly.  I was definitely the grown up of the group despite being the youngest.  They even flirted with the waiter.  It was pretty hilarious.

Finally I got home and at about 3 am I got to sleep.  Then today I met up with my parents and we braved the snow to go to the Christmas choral concert at BYU.  It was wonderful. Here is one of the songs as recorded on my phone.  It was the grand finale with all the choirs surrounding you and the orchestra.

Before I went to the concert my Christmas tree was finally delivered. I had ordered it through a company called Five Star Christmas Trees and the experience was a disaster.  They had promised me they would deliver it yesterday between 10:15 and 2.  It didn’t come until today at 11:30.  I tried to get through on the phone and they were not helpful or very apologetic.

Then when I did get the tree today it was smaller than what I had ordered, the delivery man had no idea about the install that I paid for and I didn’t get the recycle bag I ordered.  Buyer beware!

Anyway, I got the tree decorated tonight and I think it turned out very beautifully.  I love it.  I put on 900 twinkle lights and my memory ornaments and framed photo ornaments.

I hope you are all enjoying your Christmas festivities!  Merry Christmas!

Christmas Decor 2011

Merry Christmas! It is officially the holiday season in my world because my special Memory Tree is up and full of ornaments and lights.  I love my tree because I have tons of ornaments that symbolize different parts of my life.  I have ornaments for Maryland, BYU, Hawaii, New York City, Graduate school, Indianapolis ect.

This tradition started on my mission when I purchased a set of Indianapolis ornaments featuring the speedway, Christmas tree of lights and the city skyline.  After that I realized that ornaments were small and unlike other souvenir chotchkies they don’t hang around all year gathering dust.

Over time I have added other ornaments including a set of 20 picture frames (I got a great deal 1.99 each!).  I also have balls and trim to create a silver and blue theme without it being overpoweringly ‘themey’.  I like Christmas trees to look pulled together but not perfect- you need just that touch of hominess. (This lady on my mission taught me that you decorate a Christmas tree in layers with filler balls in the back to and then medium trim and then special ornaments on top.  This makes it look fuller and eye catching)

Its funny because not many people see my tree- especially in a year like this where I probably won’t host a Christmas party in my apartment.  Nevertheless, it gives me pleasure and provides many warm memories.  Its a way to turn an apartment of one into a holiday filled with love.

Some people might think it is a waste of time to put so much work into something enjoyed by only one person but I disagree.  I think it is very important as an older single person to establish your own unique traditions all year but especially during the holidays.

It helps me to feel a sense of stability and ensures I will have happy things to look forward to each year.  I think happiness when you are single requires a little more planning than when you have other people to do the planning for you!  I highly recommend it for anyone who is single kids or not- decide what you want in a Christmas and then go out and make it.

Don’t feel like anything is too silly to do ‘just for you’.  You matter and are worth planning happy memories for. Don’t let yourself get bogged down in self-pity (and Christmas goodies! This year I am doing the sugar fast and so the more I’m out of the house the better!).

I was worried that with my new sofa I wouldn’t be able to fit the tree and its a cozy main room but I love it!   I am so looking forward to this Christmas season.  I have lots planned.  Tonight I am going to the Messiah Sing-in in American Fork (my 5th year in a row attending), tomorrow is Anna’s choral concert  A Celebration of Christmas at BYU, next weekend I have Christmas Carol at Hale Theater (another essential Christmas tradition), and then the Nutcracker on Saturday.

On the 17th I am having my Christmas Swimfest! Its going to be fun.  Its at the Gene Fullmer pool in West Jordan at 9:30.  I have Christmas swim caps and we will swim together.  Then after we will go to the Golden Corral for breakfast!  Anyone is welcome! On December 20th I have my vocal recital for my voice lessons. Plus, my sister and her family are coming into town sometime.  It stands to be a great Christmas season!  (and don’t forget scores of Christmas music and movies!).

I hope you all have great Decembers and I will keep you posted on mine. Let’s just pray I don’t get sick so nothing will spoil my plans.

On a side note, I have a Christmas card I’d like to send out so if you can get me your address I’d be very grateful.  Merry Christmas friends!
