700 Subscribers Q and A Request

I have exciting news!  Over on my youtube channel I am almost at 700 subscribers.  To commemorate that number I thought I would finally do a good old fashioned Q and A.  Of  course, I naturally wanted to include all of you, my loyal blog readers.  Although, there isn’t much you don’t know about me!  Still, ask me anything.  Ask me about movies, music, swimming, faith, work, books, whatever you like.  I will do my best to answer whatever you throw at me.

You can put your question in the comments section on this post, the video or email me at smilingldsgirl@yahoo.com.  I look forward to chatting with all of you and seeing what you come up with.

Thanks!

Christmas All Time Favorites Collab

Merry Christmas everyone!  I had the fun opportunity on my channel to do a collaboration with 5 other youtubers answering 5 questions about Christmas.  I really think it turned out well and I’ve enjoyed seeing the other ladies posts which I have links to in my video.

  2. What is your favorite Christmas memory?
  3. What is your favorite Santa item?
  4. What is your favorite cookie or dessert at Christmas?
  5. What is your favorite beauty/health item during the holidays?

I feel like I’ve exhausted all of my people to tag but anyone can do this one if you want.

Friday Five: Songs from One Artist- Josh Groban

Hey guys!  It’s time for the Friday Five and this week Sara has asked us to profile an artist and pick 5 of his or her songs we like.  I debated on who to chose but she said we’d be doing this again so decided to go with Josh Groban.  I love Josh Groban partly because he has the voice of an angel but also for giving me one of the best concert experiences of my life.

I’ve seen Josh 3 times but the 2nd time was in 2007 before I started this blog.  I had gotten tickets way up in the bleachers and the only reason I was able to get those was because I had joined Josh’s fan club.  At this time in my life I was pretty depressed and miserable with my job and life, and just needed a pick-me-up you might say.  So I went to the concert with my roommate Camille and sitting way up high I was excited but it was a little hard to hear.

His opening act was awful but then they announced they were filming the dvd for his Awake album that night!  I was very excited and went and got a soda.  I’m not sure if it was my wearing the fan club t-shirt but a lady came up to me and asked if I wanted to change seats.  They needed to fill up the lower bowl seats for the DVD.  I said yes and grabbed Camille and we ended up on one of the top rows!  It was so amazing to go from zero to hero in a few minutes.  I was able to go right up to the stage and he kind of gave me a high five.  It was so thrilling and I think even more so because it was unexpected.  Felt like winning the lottery for one night!

Afterwards I was happy for like 2 weeks which was a long stretch for that time in my life.  I think it was one of those tender mercies sometimes God throws us along the way.  Not a big deal but just something to help us keep the faith.

So that’s why Josh Groban will always be meaningful to me.  Plus, his voice is perfection to boot!

Let me know what you think of my picks and video (if not subscribed please do!)..  And have you ever been to a memorable concert?  Share below.  Thanks so much!

Am I a Youtube (or Blogging) Failure?

Today I posted a video on my youtube channel talking about what constitutes success and failure on youtube.  It is easy to get too focused on the views and feel like a failure if something doesn’t get many hits.  I think the same things applies to blogging.

It can be a little frustrating when a post I work for days on gets little views when a post on BBQ sauce gets thousands of hits a month.  Sometimes I wish it was reversed but the important thing is the community I get to interact with and all I learn along the way.  If you are a blogger and don’t get the hits you would like stop thinking about it.  Just enjoy the journey and if you write from that place you are more likely to get views than trying to calculate what people will like.

I can’t say enough how much I appreciate all the support you guys have given me over the years.  I am on year 7 of this blog.  Can you believe it?  I can’t.  This and the movie blog/channel are the best things I do in my life.  It has helped me figure out so many obstacles in my life.  I’ve laughed.  I’ve cried.  I’ve shared my heart and learned to write a little bit better with every post.  Thank you so much!

Idina and Elsa

So I have been having a lot of fun lately!

I guess you could say I’ve had Frozen on the mind of late! I have been continuing with my series on youtube reviewing the animated Oscars nominees and having a blast and knew that 2013 was coming up.  In my Disney Canon review on my blog I admit I was a little defensive.  I had just seen a lot of Frozen trolling on youtube and blogs and it made me sad.  Not that everyone has to think the same way about a movie I love but that they had to be so vicious about it- especially to young girls who love it so much.  That really bummed me out.

So I knew 2013 was coming up and I wanted to strike a different tone and have fun with my Frozen review- trolls be darned!  I worked really hard on my costume, wig and the review itself (and the other high quality 4 films I was looking at as well).

I also went to an Idina Menzel concert which definitely put me in the mood! My friend Heidi went with me and we had such a good time hanging out and enjoying good music (although the building was organized terribly it was worth it).

elsa4I’ve been a huge fan of Idina Menzel for years- going back to the music of Rent (not the show as it is too R rated for me).  I of course loved her on the Wicked soundtrack.  Here’s a clip of singing one of the songs at the concert:

and the highlight for me was when she sang Let it Go and then invited little girls from the audience to come up and sing with her.  It was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen and shows what a great thing Frozen has been for these young girls.  It reminds me of how I loved Little Mermaid growing up.

I mean if that doesn’t melt your heart I don’t know what is wrong with you!

But really every song she did was amazing including some great Broadway standards.  I swear if I could have any gifts it would be to be able to sing like that.  Awe inspiring!

So with that inspiration I continued to work on my costume and it really was a lot of work to find the right dress, get the right wig, a crown, make-up etc. But obviously it was a fun kind of work, a project you might say.  Here is what I came up with.

elsa6I ended up not feeling comfortable about the neckline and the sheerness of the top of the dress and so I hunted till I found another shirt in nearly identical color to the sleeves of the dress I could wear underneath.  A costume is not an excuse for immodesty in my book! (I admit I was proud of that!)

elsa2 Here’s how the video turned out.  It’s a bit of a long one but give it a watch or just a few minutes of it a watch as I do the Frozen review first.   I’ve been learning a ton lately on graphics and using Adobe Premiere so I think my videos have come a long way!

Anyway, it was a ton of work to put together but also a ton of fun.  I’m really proud with how it all turned out.

Now on to the next project!  Star Wars baby!

Have you guys been doing any projects or hobbies lately?  What about Halloween?  Got any costume plans?

Talking Classical Novels with My Mom

It was so much fun today over at my youtube channel.  My Mom was kind of enough to join me on my channel for 2 videos about one of our favorite topics- books!  Particularly classic novels.  I’d love if you checked them out and gave them thumbs up.  Thanks!

I’m always open to anyone who wants come on my channel and help me with a video.  If you are willing let me know.  Even better if you have an idea for a video that would be amazing!

Thanks Mom!

My Favorite Books Video

Just wanted to share this with all of you guys.  I made a video on some of my favorite books.  Of course as soon as I finished I realized I had forgotten Jane Eyre and Howard’s End- 2 of my favorites.  Oh well.  These are very good!

I would love it if you would give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel if you are not already.  This video is a little bit longer so maybe more of a podcast length.  Put it on while you are doing busy work and I think you will enjoy it.

Here’s just the top 3 if you don’t feel like watching the long one.

Are any of the books I mention favorites of yours?  Please comment here or on the video.  Thanks!
