Sugar Fast 2.0

Yes you read right.  I have to go on the sugar fast again.  Urgh, groan, sigh…I went to the doctor’s today and I’ve been gaining weight since starting the thyroid meds (I know most people lose but leave it to my body to be weird).  Basically sugar is just problematic.  Especially with all the training I’m doing.  I have to make sure that I am eating the right kinds of food because my metabolism is all messed up.

On the plus side, I feel good.  I feel strong.  My pain is improving.  I know the meds are working.  My times are getting better and better.  I know I am a healthy person.

I just have to help them out by being extra strict.  I’m not going to lie to you- I’m not looking forward to it.  I’m starting slow- just perfect until next Saturday (I already have treat ordered for book club).

I just wish I could get to the point where I can be less intense.  I don’t think I can keep up perfection forever.  It makes me crazy! I’ve worked too hard to mess it up at this stage.  Just got to press on through.

Please accept my apologies in advance for the moaning and groaning I will assuredly do.

So, no sugar except for fruit, no white carbs…Sigh

This sucks but I’ve worked too hard to screw it up soon.  I just wish my body could behave like a normal human being and less of a freak show.  I’m so tired of getting a look of confusion from my doctor saying ‘Hmmm…This is unexpected?’.

Anyway, its been a frustrating day.  AHHHHHHH!

  1. I can relate….. Though when it’s not until my thyroid levels are normal (which is normally at just level 1 for me to feel “normal’) that I stop gaining, but even then once they are normal I have to work to get the weight off. I have found lower carb seems to do the trick even if my levels are off. Good luck 🙂

    1. Thanks. I’ve been on the meds for about 2 months so we are still trying to figure out the right level. I’ve been careful with what I eat but this will be taking it to the next level. I did the same last fall and it did work. I was miserable but it worked. I’ll try to be less miserable this time, but no guarantees. 🙂
I’ve been training really hard to get ready for my race and so this will only help me to do better come race day. I’ve certainly worked too hard to give up now. I know the scale does not tell the whole story because I am stronger, my times are better, my stamina is better, my recovery is better, my pain is better. That’s the most important thing to me. Still, I am not going to gain another 10 pounds if it kills me! (Ok maybe not kills me but you get the idea).
Anyway, please check back in. I know I will need all the encouragement I can get.

    2. I haven’t heard that term level 1. What is that? I’m still learning about this thyroid business. They have me on 50 mg right now and it has helped a lot already. Not helped me lose weight but in other ways helped a lot.

      1. Level 1 is in reference to the level that I am best at, usually doctors will say you are normal if your levels are at least a 5. I just recently got bumped up to 175 mg because my levels were crazy, at 150 they were still 45 (WAY) off! ugh. Yeah, getting normalized just stops me from gaining usually but that’s it, I have to work twice as hard to get off what was gained. It’s a pain. I have been dealing with mine for gosh 9 years now.

        1. The doctor said I am a 5 after the 2 months of treatment. Did you find you had to keep raising the amount? That your body adjusted? So you found you had to work twice as hard to lose weight on the meds? I’ve had such a hard time losing but regardless of my size I am healthy.

        2. Over the years it has been upped but kids and such I would imagine is a factor in that because it can alter your levels. My doctor I had also liked to go more so how I felt vs the numbers since like 5 is still high for some people. Yes I do have to work twice as hard but not really “on the meds” but because my thyroid is now hypothyroid. The meds don’t stop me from losing they do help in the sense they stop me from gaining however, anything that is gained before the levels were normal it’s up to me to lose meaning that just because I get normal from the meds doesn’t mean now the weight will just go away now it’s normal. Those pounds are there so you have to do the work to now lose them. The meds just make it possible for you to lose instead of gain. BUT they are not a weight loss drug if that makes sense? They just regulate your thyroid you still have to jump start your metabolism. Those who have thyroid issues usually have to work out more and watch what they eat more then most people. It’s just how our bodies work not necessarily by effect of the medicine but the actual thyroid. When my levels are normal I find that losing weight is much easier (still a challenge) but an easier one vs when I am not.

        3. Thanks. The working out is definitely not a problem. I’m pretty good with the eating but now I’m definitely stepping it up a notch.
