Healthy Snacking

So I have another healthy living question.  Now that I am not eating fast food occasionally I will find myself hungry while in the car for long stretches.  For instance, yesterday I had a ton of errands that didn’t finish until around 3 pm.  In my previous life I would have gotten some fast food for lunch, but I can’t do that anymore.  Here’s my question- what snack could I have in my car that would be healthy, affordable, not melt, and not need refrigeration? Any ideas? Beef jerky was the best thing I was able to come up with. Thanks in advance for your help.

The Type of Snacks I would have eaten before

  1. You know what. I always keep some under 200 calorie protein bars. South Beach has good ones and so does Special K. I carry something to eat in my purse all the time just in case. Also make sure you ask yourself if you are really hungry. I notice that sometimes I am more thirst than hungry but I have a hard time deciding whether it is hunger or thirst. Just some thoughts.

  2. apples, dried fruit, air popped popcorn you made at home and bagged up (seriously so filling and if you pop it there is no salt or oil and you control whats on it, but I like it plain), fruit leather, fruit cups in light syrup, Reduced fat wheat thins, carrot sticks, celery sticks, a small serving of peanut butter with whatever you want to dip, I heard they now have a single serving of hummus but I’m not sure if it needs to be refridgerated.

PS you should get a cooler. It can be a small soft side one for lunches. Its better to have stuff just in case then not have it and need it. I take one with me a lot!

  3. Thanks for all the great comments. I like each and every suggestion! I need to buy an air popcorn machine. It’s on my list! I’ll let you all know what I come up with. Roasted edamame sounds delicious. Wish Trader Joes was here!

  4. hey mabey if you did get a cooler than you could get some lowfat yogurt they can be delicious and some sliced apples (with lemon juice drizzled on them to keep them from going brown) would be a delious snack you could have a bananna or some cut up water mellon just make sure to have a napkin with you just in case.
I will see you rach quite a bit this year so I will go to harmons and pick out some easy to snack on heathy food!

    1. Your ideas are awesome. Thanks. I am starting with having energy bars and rice cakes in the car and go from there.
